Stuart 504

Model Engineering > Boilers
Images top right are the 'before' pictures.  Taken boiler apart, and, similar to all the boilers in the Stuart 50x series, there are actually very few parts.   The boiler is a little dinged in places and needs a good clean and polish.  The castings and sheet metal sides have been painted with something horrible (Hammerite ?) - so that's coming off for a start!  It looks as if it was painted with a 4" paste brush!  Generally the castings are clean and tidy.

Images below are work in progress.  Still unsure what the awful paint is on these boiler side panels.  Cellulose thinners doesn't disolve it like it would with (say Stuart) paint.  Anyway, it's comming off!  Actually just a top layer of paint came off, the Hammerite is underneath.  New 'safe' Nitromors isn't touching it either - the suggested next step is sand-blasting and I haven't the kit for that. Nitromors is removing some of it, but it's taking hours.  Below are pictures of the paint stripping and repainting.   The Nitromors didn't do a very good job, so sanding is the next step.

Satin black (from Halfords) for the castings - the old paint was removed using thinners, then the castings were sprayed with etch resist, then red oxide primer, and then the satin black top coat.
